Our scheduled 14.25 departure departed took off c. 17.00, a packed flight…
… landing at O’Hare c. 22.20 Central Time, some 35 minutes after my connecting flight to England had left. United agents were on hand by the arriving-gate to deal with those passengers who had missed their connections & are spending the night in Chicago. I am re-booked to fly home via Washington Dulles tomorrow morning, and the Chicago>Washington flight boards at 05.30 with scheduled landing at Heathrow 21.55. I have been told that my bags will be transferred to the new flight; that is, I won’t get them tonight. The Airport Hilton, adjoining the terminal, is not on the courtesy-hotel list of accommodations made available to passengers missing their connections. The available courtesy hotel is, the agent suggested, 5 minutes from the airport. The last courtesy hotel I was given at O’Hare was a one-hour taxi ride, out in the sticks, the driver getting lost several times ont eh way there. Tonight, I guessed that at best I’d be in bed c. 00.30, without wash-bag & clean clothing, rising at 02.30 to return to the airport & go through security at 04.00. Starbucks opens at 04.00, the Red Carpet Club at 04.30. Decision: I’ll stay & spend the night in the airport.
